One of the biggest impacts that I’ve seen technology make on a school this year is the installation of a simple but powerful projector and electric screen in the school hall.
The hardware depends on the size of the hall but the application is similar for Secondary and Primary schools. We usually do a demonstration on completing the install and I love to see the faces of the staff as its potential begins to dawn. The gasps and smiles alone as the electric screen descends almost make it worthwhile. (I even had a round of applause from a hall full of children seeing it for the first time – we hadn’t even switched the projector on!)The sound system has got to be good and blowing the roof off is often the aim.

It is the mission of Children in Need to help children and young people who are considered to be disadvantaged across the UK by providing them with the resources and support that will enable them to reach their full potential.
In 2008 the BBC Children in Need Appeal raised £38 million and for every penny the charity received, a penny went towards projects helping disadvantaged children in the UK. The charity can ensure that all the money donated is given to the children as the charity uses its investment income and Gift Aid to cover all running costs.
In light of this, you can then rest assured that the money we donate through your purchases will indeed reach the children and be used to benefit them in the ways deemed necessary to suit their needs. For example, the charity provides support in the form of grants to organisations working with children who may have experienced mental, physical or sensory disabilities; behavioural or psychological disorders; are living in poverty or situations of deprivation; or suffering through distress, abuse or neglect.
More specifically, Children in Need have helped the Marlow Community Playgroup by providing their project with a nursery for children with profound special needs who are unable to access mainstream provision and also Maddie and Lillie by providing their project with a part-time social worker and therapy sessions for children such as themselves who have lost a significant adult through a life limiting illness.

Recycling is becoming increasingly important, not only for the environment but for animals and people. The Projector Lamp found in projectors should be recycled, not thrown away. Besides being breakable, they contain mercury which is harmful to the environment, causing a safety risk. There are several ways to recycle your Projector Lamps, whether you are a business with lots of bulbs or a homeowner with only one projector bulb. Below are four simple steps to recycling your projector lamps

Remove each lamp as instructed in the projector’s user manual. Always wait for the bulb to cool down before removing.
- Step 2
Once the old Projector Lamp has been removed place inside the new replacement lamp box check the new lamp works okay and securely fit it inside the box. Bubble wrap if possible.

If your employer recycles projector Lamps (certain businesses recycle their bulbs and will gladly take bulbs from employees to recycle as well). Then please just hand over your old projector lamp to them however if they don’t please continue to step 4.

Projector lamps information
New projectors are supplied with a new lamp fitted, which for the average projector lasts around 2,000 hours. You will start to notice the picture dulling as you use up the hours and this is when you can start to think about getting a replacement lamp. Most projector lamp manufacturers give a 3 months warranty on new lamps.
How to Replace a Projector lamp
To replace a lamp module, you simply Remove the cover this may have a screw holding it in. you then need to unscrew the screws holding the projector lamp and then remove the old lamp. Open your new lamp box, remove the lamp and place directly in the projector the same way as the old lamp came out. Tighten the screws back up and place the cover back on and screw back up again. Specific instructions on how to replace the Projector Lamp will vary slightly from projector to projector, so the instruction manual should be looked at. Useful tips for extending lamp life
Never touch the lamp with your fingers. Deposits from fingerprints cause temperature “hot spots” and temperature gradient stresses the glass often resulting in earlier lamp failure.
Try and keep the air filters of your projector clean as blocked filters make the lamp overheat causing earlier lamp failure.
Please once finished using the projector do not unplug straight away as the lamp has to cool down if you keep unplugging the projector instead of turning the projector off using the remote you may shorten your lamp life by up to 50%
If your projector has a high/low lamp/lamp switch, you can extend your average lamp life by using the “low lamp/lamp” position whenever possible.

Should I Get a Video Projector or a Television for my Home Theatre?
Modern television’s can be used in a home theater system. If you already own a good, working HD television you have at least a basic way of viewing television and DVD images. The question is whether you need to upgrade to a more advanced television, or, in home theater lingo, a video display device.
Here is where consumers get bogged down with the terminology and potential choices. Consumers now have the choice of not only a dozen sizes from 26-inches to 80-inches, but also have to choose between plasma, LCD, rear projection, and front projection. They also need to think about is it HD-Ready, Full HD or even 3D enabled now.
The size of the television or video display device you get really depends on the size of the room environment you will be using it in and how close you will be sitting to the screen.
However, the decision as to what type of television you get is a little more complex. However, no matter what type of television or video display device you purchase, make sure it is high definition compatible, as all of the U.K. have access to an increasing amount of high definition programming, either over-the-air, cable, and/or satellite sources.
With specific reference as to whether one should get a television-type video display vs a video projector, the main factor you have to take into consideration is whether you intend to watch a lot of television programs vs Blu-ray Disc and/or DVD movies.
Factors To Take Into Consideration
Important factors to take note of when considering a video projector vs a television-type video display include:
1. Video projectors do not have RF cable or antenna connections like a television has. However, if your cable or satellite box has either S-Video, component, and/or DVI, or HDMI (for HD components) connections you would be able to hook them up to a video projector.
2. Video projectors have a very limited bulb life. In other words, if you are watching TV on your video projector about four or more hours every day, you might need to replace the light source bulb about every 18 months to 2 years at about 100-300 Pounds (or more).
3. Due to the very large screen sizes used in video projection, standard TV or satellite do not look as good as they do on standard large screen television. In addition, If you have HDTV-cable or HDTV-satellite, you would get much better results.
Projectors are best for viewing DVD and Blu-ray movies. They are also good for big events, such as the World Cup. If you desire longer bulb life, limit your viewing to about 12 hours a week and your projection bulb will last a few years.
If you are looking for a replacement for nightly TV watching, it would be more cost effective to buy a large screen, LCD, or Plasma Television set rather than a video projector.
